Mahalo For Removing Your Slippahs….

If you have never visited our beautiful island home of Kaua’i, the title Red Clay Jazz Festival may not strike a chord with you.  Our soil is very very rich in iron and has a very very distinct red-brown color.  As you fly to Kaua’i, you see a lovely combination of lush green, foamy white, crystal blue, and rich red brown.  These colors are home to us!

But, that rich red dirt can soil items and you may also encounter signs at businesses and private homes that say “Mahalo for removing your slippers” (with “slippers” pronounced as “slippahs” and meaning shoes in general, but we all wear flip flops that we call, ahem, “slippahs”).  Most people who live on island automatically slip off their slippers before entering their home or any one’s  home — a habit that also carries over to the mainland!

Red dirt is not a liability, however, to many Kaua’i residents.  In fact, a Red Dirt Shirt is a great gift for you or for someone back on the mainland.  The Red Dirt Shirt company was borne from necessity and innovation — on September 11, 1992, Hurricane Iniki devastated the island of Kaua’i.  A small tee shirt company saw all its white tee shirts that were waiting to be printed drenched in water and red dirt.  Not to be defeated, they dried the shirts, printed Hawaiian motifs, and a business was born, with lots of reddish brown shirts and accessories for sale.  Just remember when you wash your dirt shirt for the first time, wash separately or you may end up with coordinated reddish brown underwear…. and always remember to remove your slippahs….and please, do not take a better pair when you leave!

Mahalo!
