Have You Seen the Sleeping Giant?

When you are at Islander on the Beach (www.hulanow.com or 1 855 HULA NOW ) , you have seen the strange mountain range with the sharp peak. This ridge is the Nounou Mountain ridge and it is known as the “sleeping giant”.  Let your imagination roam…..the ridge does have a resemblance to a sleeping giant. Local legend is that the giant once roamed the land and was much loved by the Hawaiians.  The giant helped the farmers as they could plant taro fields in his footsteps. One day the village chief wanted a new heaiu built but the villagers said that they were far too busy to do this job. The giant volunteered, and within 2 weeks, a new heaiu was completed. The villagers were so pleased that they had a huge luau for him. The giant ate so much at the luau that he laid down to sleep and has not awoken.

Other folklore states that in ancient times, the people of Kauai planned to discourage any invaders to their island by lighting fires behind the mountain. The fires were said to illuminate the figure of the giant and serve to scare off any invasion forces.

No matter which story is true, the sleeping giant is a local landmark.  Make sure you look for him!
