Life Before Social Media: Bell Stones on Kaua’i

Bell stones are found on all Hawaiian islands.  They are special large stones that, when struck in just the correct spot, can produce a tone that can be heard for miles. In the  case of the Bell Stone on Kauai, the sound was thought to be able to be heard across the entire island.

In the days before telegraph, telephone, cell phones, or social media, bell stones  were one way to get the news out quickly to all people. The stone was struck for important events, such as announcing a royal birth. Striking a bell stone may have been used to warn Kaua’i residents of imminent danger from attack, such as invading warriors arriving in canoes (and see posting about Sleeping Giant to see how that played into the picture).

The Bell Stone on Kaua’i is located downhill from 2 prominent stones. The 2 boulders were placed in their current locations to calibrate the calendar to the winter and summer solstices, but no one is sure which stone was used for which solstice.

The Bell Stone is very close to our condos. To get to the Bell Stone take Highway 56 south from the condos, toward Wailua. Turn right on Highway 580. After Mile Marker Number 1, a dirt road heading back down towards the ocean will be seen. Follow the dirt road to the end where the 2 boulders are situated. The Bell Stone is about 100 feet past the guard rail.  As an added bonus, nearby is a spectacular spot to view ‘Opaeka’a Falls.

Remember, as with the rocks that remain from the heiaus, it is illegal to deface any of the stones in any way and it is disrespectful to climb on them.

Kaua’i has so many wonderful historical sites, and we hope that you will come visit them — and us — soon.
