Hanalei Bridge — Who Goes First?

A trip to Kaua’i will show you many different and unusual sights and sites and will provide you with many photo ops and stories when you return home.

The Hanalei Bridge is one of these stories.  As you head north from Kapa’a (from our Kauai vacation rental condohotels, we hope!), you will eventually arrive at the single-lane Hanalei Bridge.  This sturdy bridge has been serving the island of Kaua’i for many years (it does have a 15-ton weight limit, but we hope you did not do that much shopping in Hanalei).  The first time you come to the bridge, you might be tempted to simply keep driving.  Be careful!  Hanalei Bridge has an etiquette code.  Because traffic is generally light in this area, notice if the cars ahead of you are moving across the bridge or are stopped.  If the cars are moving, go with them.  However, if the cars are stopped, they are waiting for the other side to cross.  The rule is  all cars and trucks on one side go first, then the other side.  The wait is never long — a minute at most is our experience, if that long.  Motorists on Kaua’i understand this method of traffic control, and happily wave “Aloha” to motorists approaching from the other side as they wait their turn.

Where does this sort of camaraderie exist on the mainland?  While waiting, enjoy the lush green scenery and take a quick photo. What a story you will have to tell when you return home!
