Hanapepe — Bridges, Birds, Bread, and Dinosaurs

The Swinging Bridge at Hanapepe

Hanapepe is so filled with history and things to do!  It is an easy and beautiful drive from our condos (www.hulanow.com or 1 855 HULA NOW) and you will be delighted that you went to see the “Biggest Little Town”.

First of all, history: Hanapepe was settled in the late 1800s by Chinese rice farmers; it was the only farming area that was not associated with a plantation.  It did have a reputation for bars and wild and crazy happenings, but it is quite different now.  When the large shopping center in Lihue was built (Kukui Grove, early 1980s), Hanapepe started to decline.  Then the infamous Hurricane Iniki (1992) roared on through, causing much damage, especially to the famous swinging bridge, and some buildings.

However, the bridge was rebuilt — and you can walk over it — and is used daily by local residents. It is one of those “must-see” spots on the island of Kaua’i.  The town is now home to not only the famous bridge but also art galleries and Banana Patch Studio,  housed in a beautifully restored old building (must pick up some tiles here).

Movie history: The Thorn Birds was filmed in Hanapepe and parts of Jurassic Park were filmed in the nearby valley.

Stop in the Hanapepe Cafe & Bakery for fresh, homemade pies and cakes and other goodies. Lunch last week (a great salad with fresh homemade herb bread) was accompanied by a slack guitarist.  What a  treat!

What are you waiting for?  Get going to Hanapepe and have fun!
