Flora of Kaua’i — Ginger

In a previous blog (https://kauaikolea.wordpress.com/2011/11/08/kauai-tropical-gardens/), we listed some of our favorite gardens to visit on the Garden Island.  Kaua’i is lush and green and always has something blooming — birds of paradise, hibiscus, plumeria, pikake jasmine, and ginger, are only a few of the many many varieties of flowers on our beautiful island.

When you think of ginger, you may be thinking that gnarly root in the grocery store or that bottle of powdered spice you pull out once a year to make Christmas gingerbread.  That ginger is only one type of ginger and it is the rhizone of  Zingiber officinale, one of the plants of Zingiberaceae group that also includes turmeric and cardamon.

If you remember back to high school biology, common names for plants and animals has long been a problem for scientists, until Linnaeus categorized the known world in the 1700s.  So while Kaua’i and other islands and tropical zones have “ginger”, it is not necessarily the ginger that we eat.

You must visit at least one of the tropical gardens on Kaua’i when you visit us.  You will learn so much about our flora while your eyes and nose will gladly take in the beauty and fragrance of all our plants.  You will soon be able to recognize a variety of “gingers”.

Unlike high school, however, no pop quiz!  When you stay with us, you are on the vacation of a lifetime, every time.
