The Kilauea Lighthouse on Kaua’i

About 15 to 20 minutes north of our condos sits the Kilauea Lighthouse.  It is perched on the cliffs overlooking the beautiful blue Pacific Ocean.  The lighthouse was built in 1913 to assist mariners, and it served as a pivotal navigation aid for ships sailing on the Orient run. The lighthouse station consists of a concrete lighthouse, 3 field-stone keepers’ quarters, a fuel oil shed, cisterns, and a supply-landing platform. The lighthouse is one of the nation’s most intact historic light stations. The lighthouse beam was turned off in the 1970s, and mariners now rely on an automated beacon — safe and efficient, but not as romantic as a welcoming light from a lighthouse!

The landmark played an important role the life of the nearby sugar plantation town of Kilauea; the lighthouse is a symbol of the town. The Point is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places and currently is managed as a 31-acre site that is part of a 203-acre wildlife refuge. It is a well-known sanctuary for seabirds. Signage throughout the refuge identifies the area’s bird species, including frigates, shearwaters, boobies, and Laysan albatrosses nesting on the property. You may see them soar the skies above the refuge, many landing on a small nearby island covered in birds. During December through May, you may even catch a glimpse of humpback whales, as this spot is one of the best on island for whale watching.

This scenic peninsula, 200-feet above sea level, is a must-see on your visit to the North Shore of Kaua’i.
