Sand Castles

The iconic summer picture of a child, sand pail and shovel in hand, is part of Americana.  Who didn’t build some sort of “sand castle” during summer vacations at the shore?  Sand art — the newest term for this sort of activity on the adult, competitive level — is often amazing on a large scale.  Sometimes, sand art is used as a seaside billboard/business card.

We have come a long way from a child’s bucket and shovel!  Sand art has its own science, as it were.  The sand:water ratio (generally 8:1) and  type of sand (grains not worn down by waves) are important data.  In competitions, only sand is usually allowed, and no coloring, wood supports, or the like.  However, the finished “creations” often are sprayed with a stabilizer and can then last for months.

Kaua’i often hosts a sand art competition in July, usually in Hanalei, a short drive from our condos. As July is a busy vacation month for the island, it is not too early to book a Kauai vacation rental with us (www.hulanow.com or 1 855 HULA NOW).  Come, play in the sand of Kaua’i.

Wishing you warm Aloha!
