The Coconut Coast of Kauai

We keep writing about the Coconut Coast, where we are located.  Do you know about the Coconut Coast?

The east side of Kaua’i is often referred to as the Royal Coconut Coast and includes sandy beaches, Sleeping Giant, shops, restaurants, sacred sites at the mouth of the Wailua River, the royal birthstones, the place of refuge, and several heiaus. The Royal Coconut Coast was home to Hawaiian royalty and encompasses the area from Kealia (north of Kapa’a) to the Opaeka’a Falls (south of Kapa’a). Kapa’a is the center of the Royal Coconut Coast.

People are generally more familiar with the term “Coconut Coast” and the story of the German entrepreneur who planned to make a fortune with coconuts.  Alas, he established a plantation of coconut seedlings, not knowing that it would take decades for these seedlings to produce coconuts for oil, food, and other useful items.  Remnants of the old coconut plantation can still be seen near our condos and the Coconut Market Place and along Kuhio Highway between mile markers 6 and 7.

Kaua’i celebrates its coconut history every year with the Coconut Festival, which will be held this year October 6 and 7 at Kapa’a Beach Park.
