Ke Ala Hele Makalae (The Kauai Multiuse Path): Upcoming Events

5_Coconut_Coast View along Ke Ala Hele Makalae in Kapaa

Did you know that the County of Kauai is installing a great multiuse path along the coast of Kauai?  The official name of the path is Ke Ala Hel Makalae, which means “The Path That Goes by the Coast”.  It is a multiuse path, closed to cars and motorized bikes, but open to bicyclists, walkers, joggers, hikers, skateboarders, rollerbladers, dog walkers, baby buggy-pushers…you get the picture! Wherever possible, the path runs right along the coast and in all cases, the path avoids the highway.

Ke Ala Hele Makalae is still a work in progress — a section that runs from Kapaa Sands Resort through Islander on the Beach and northward is scheduled to start within the year.  While not complete and fully connected, the segments that are finished offer a beautiful and peaceful way to explore the Kauai coastline.  It has been said that each town on Kauai has its own flavor and character, and each section of Ke Ala Hele Makalae has its own flavor and character, too.  Along the path you will find information about the specific area you are traversing, as well as rest stops.  Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the day.

If you are not a serious bicyclist, that is you do not bring your bicycle on vacation with you, you can still bike the path as several locations in Kapaa rent bicycles for quite reasonable rates.  But many people  walk the path alone or in small groups, chatting away with each other or simply taking in the beauty that surrounds them.

If Ke Ala Hele Makalae sounds good to you, you may be interested in these events:

  • Pedal to the Meadow, May 25, 2014 — a 15.75 mile race that starts at sea level and ends at an elevation of 3835 feet
  • Mayor-a-Thon, June 21, 2014 — a free event right on Ke Ala Hele Makalae; bike, walk, or run 1, 2, 4, 6, or 8 miles with the Mayor of Kauai
  • Paradise Ride Kauai 2014 — ride up to 110 miles over 2 days
