Wailua River, Kauai

The Waimea River on the garden island of Kauai is one of the longest rivers in the State of Hawaii. The river is about 12.1 miles (19.5 km).  The river’s source is the Alakai Swamp, the largest high-elevation swamp in the world, located in Kauai’s central highlands.  The Waimea River flows south, passing through the breathtaking 3000-foot-deep (910 m) Waimea Canyon (the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”).

One interesting fact about the Waimea River is that every winter, high surf dams the mouth of the river with sand, and the heavy rains flood the valley. During this period, local surfers dig out a channel allowing high volume of water to flow to the ocean, creating standing waves perfect for river surfing.

Another river on Kauai is the Wailua River.  This river is a long, slowly meandering river that starts at the Waialeale Crater and is fed by several tributaries on the way to the ocean. It is the only navigable river in all of Hawaii. Several forks in the river lead to waterfalls and can be easily explored by kayak. The most popular river trip is to the sacred Fern Grotto. Flat bottom boats carry visitors 40 minutes up the river to this natural wonder.   At the mouth of the river are several large stones with ancient petroglyphs carvings on them. Viewing of these stones is dependent on the amount of sand in the area. Heavy rains often wash away the sand and reveal the carvings.

The Waimea River, Wailua River, Fern Grotto, petroglyph rocks, Waimea Canyon, and the secret waterfalls are all within an easy drive of any one of our affordable luxury condos.
