Zip Lining — High Above the Treetops on Kaua’i

In the iconic song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow“, our beloved Iz (Israel Kamakawiwo’ole) sings about “high above the chiminey tops”.  How about seeing Kaua’i high above the treetops on a zipline tour?

Some basic information about ziplining and ziplines. Ziplines are not new and are not simply used as outdoor adventure trips.  In remote areas, ziplines are common means of transportation and for delivery of needed goods. Commercial ziplines, as we have here on Kaua’i, are designed for fun.  Not to worry!  You are given some instructions, fitted with a protective helmet and gloves, and your harness is attached to the zipline cable (in case you thought you needed upper body strength to hang on!).  That said, most tours do have age, height, and weight requirements for users’ protection.

On most zipline tours, you will climb to the top of a tower, maybe 25 feet high or so, clip on, and then zip on out for rides ranging up to 1200 feet long!  A guide will check your harness each time and provide advice on each separate zip. If you keep your eyes open — and we hope you will — you will see the beautiful scenery of Kaua’i zip on by in ways that you cannot see by hiking or driving.  Most tours are several hours long, many include lunch, and some end up at waterfalls for swimming opportunities.  You will start off on small, shorter ziplines, and progress to the longer and more exciting ones, as many as 7 ziplines in 1 tour.  Some tours allow observers (ie, you don’t zip but travel in the van from zipline to zipline and then to lunch and swimming), so if you have smaller, younger, or more reluctant family members, you can still participate and everyone can have a fun adventure.

Zipline tours fill up fast because the operators can accommodate only a few people a day.  You would be best served making reservations before you arrive on island or shortly thereafter. Several companies in Princeville and Lihue areas offer tours of various times and at various costs.
